Our Story

From A Pushcart To Global.

With a whole lot of hustle and a sprinkling of chutzpah, over the course of a century, we’ve grown our tiny operation into an international addiction.

1918

Launched !

The year was 1918. The place, Williamsburg, NY.

In the multicultural melting pot that was Brooklyn, two brothers, Sonny and Joe, started a small pushcart business selling their traditional recipes to locals. Using authentic ingredients, herbs and spices they whipped up delicacies daily, and proudly sold them on busy street corners.

1945

Scaling up to a Storefront

Beloved locally, our pushcarts survived right through the great depression and on, business growing through word of mouth, until the demand exploded. We then took the plunge and moved to a proper storefront, proudly becoming the hummus hotspot in our hometown.

1964

More Mediterranean

This year marked our expansion to producing delicacies beyond our signature hummus. Deep, bitter tahini. Rich, smoky babaganush. Bold, spicy schug. Made with only the freshest ingredients and authentic recipes, our expanded line was an instant hit. We were proud to share our passion for Mediterranean cuisine, and old customers, as well as newcomers, flocked to explore the bold and savory flavors we now offered.

1978

Commercial, Yet Homestyle

Business was booming and it was time to move once again.

At this point, we decided to purchase a large, spacious commercial kitchen. Despite this, even in a world where mass-production was all the rage, we remained true to our family heritage, as we continued producing our salads and spreads in small batches.

1990

Local Distribution

As our brand continued to grow, we realized it's time to bring our products to a wider customer base. We made the strategic decision to start distributing to local retailers, offering consumers more convenient access to our products. Never one to compromise, we maintained the high-quality and freshness that people have come to expect from any Sonny & Joe's product.

2005

Going National

After much pressure from fans, we leveled up from local distribution to distributing across the USA. It allowed us to extend our reach way beyond our beloved city. Our customer base grew exponentially! This was at a time when the population started moving towards a more health-conscious lifestyle and our natural and nutritious products were exactly what they were looking for, with the added excitement of authentic Meditteranean goodness.

2012

Increasing to International

Our next step was obvious. Why stop at national, when there's a whole world waiting for wholesome spreads with the highest standards? Our operation expanded tenfold to keep up with the demands of selling internationally Nonetheless, as much as we scaled up our business, there's one thing we never scaled-and that's our recipes. Just as when we started out, we continue to produce in microbatches, ensuring that every container, and every customer, gets only the best in flavor, quality and satisfaction.

2023

Still Growing

It's more than a century since we started out, where we went from being a pushcart business to selling globally. But, we're still growing for the benefit of Our loyal customers. Whether it's bringing our products to even more countries, or constantly developing, tasting, and tweaking new recipes and varieties, the story of Sonny & Joe's is still being written as we bring you the best of the Mediterrean.

Family owned, Operated and Proud

To this day, Sonny & Joe’s is still run by the great- (and great-great) grandkids

As a family-owned business, we pack plenty of pride, passion, care and love into every container of salad and spread we ship.

Sonny & Joe’s is our family’s heritage and our grandparents legacy, and we are determined to continue to do them proud, every day.

As we continue to grow internationally, we remain firmly committed to producing every item in our traditionally microbatches, so we can continue to ensure the taste and quality you’ve grown to love us for.
